6 Easy Steps To a Life That Doesn’t Suck

Does your life or some aspect of it, currently suck?  If so, what part isn’t working and what are you willing to do to bring it closer to what you want?  We all go through periods in our lives where we’re not happy with how things are.  These times are nothing more than signals that an adjustment is needed to get back on track.

In case you’re not sure where the track is, when you’re feeling happy, you’re on track.  When things are not feeling all that great, you’re off track.  Keeping your life in a state of non-suckiness can take some work but mostly it takes awareness.  Here are a few easy steps you can follow that should get (or keep) you on track.

Get clear on your vision – You may have some vague idea that you want to be happy and you’re not feeling happy now. On the one hand, good for you that you know something is off.  On the other hand do you know what it will take to feel happy?  If not, create a detailed vision for what you want.  What does happy mean to you?  Who is in your life, what is your role, what does a great day look like?  Get as detailed as you can and make something tangible as a daily reminder.  Write a story, create a vision board, paint a picture.  Whatever medium you choose, make something that you can put on a wall where you will see it every day.

Give yourself a break. Most people are harder on themselves than on anyone else.  If you beat up on yourself because you’re not perfect, learn to love your imperfections.  You’re doing the best you can in your current circumstances and you deserve credit for that.  Give yourself a hug, buy yourself something nice as a reward for small accomplishments.  Treat yourself.  Appreciate you just as you are.

Stop comparing yourself to everyone else. You are not them and they are not you.  This may come as a surprise to you but you have a lot to offer this world.  When you put your focus on how much better someone else is than you, you deprive the world of the gift of you.  You hold yourself back from accomplishing the things that will bring you fulfillment.

Create an awesome list. Write a list of as many things as you can about yourself that are awesome.  Shoot for 50 then keep adding to it.  For some people, this is the hardest task they’ve ever attempted.  But once you get going you’ll be surprised at just how awesome you really are.  Little things that you never thought of will begin to creep into your awareness.  Let other people know you’re working on it.  People who are close to you, people you work with, anyone who comes into contact with you on a regular basis could add to the list for you.  Keep the list handy because an awesome quality that you have can come up at any time.  When it does, write it down.   And read it every day.

Take Daily Action – Take whatever action you intuitively feel will get you closer to where you want to be. For instance, if you’re not happy with your job, do you need to quit and find another or is there some adjustment you can make and stay where you are.  If that person grates on your nerves is he showing you something you need to be aware of in yourself?  What’s the source of your unhappiness?  Is it another person, the environment, perhaps your perspective?  What action can you take or what awareness can you use to make your life feel better?

Create an Appreciation List – When you wake up in the morning and before you go to sleep at night, write a list of at least 5 things you can appreciate. Is the sun shining?  Even if it’s raining, think of the beautiful flowers being nourished by the rain.  Are the birds outside your window singing pleasantly or making too much noise?  What’s your perspective?  Did your day go well?  Even if not, you can find one thing that made you laugh.  Be grateful for that.  By seeking out the positive aspects of your day and making that a consistent practice, you’ll begin to notice that life isn’t all that bad.

Allow yourself to enjoy life.  Focus on the positive aspects of your day.  Turn off the news, get off the computer and go outside.  Be with nature, play with a puppy, listen to a baby laughing.  You can’t stay in suck phase when these things are going on around you.  And most of all, identify what will make you happy and take one small action every day to move you closer to what you want.  Be pro-active and start enjoying life.
